DREAM/PLAN/DO

A LEAP to a new life!

After years of a war path to my own demise: day & night binge drinking, hanging with felons and rolling my own cigarettes (sorry, mom…) I had a serious motorcycle accident. I was tossed over the bars going over 30mph, skidding to a stop saved only by my face and shoulder. With a mangled bike my friend and I ran back to my apartment to avoid further ramifications. A stint in the Emergency Room and half a dozen medical bills later, I was sent home still battered and bloody; only to find myself in debilitating abdominal pain not a day later. I was brought back to the ER for emergency appendectomy and dozens of tests on my shoulder and heavily concussed brain.

Following a multi-day stay in a hospital bed, I was sent home. Being a year round athlete in the past, I was left stir crazy still confined to the sedentary indoors. Left numb by the pain killers prescribed, I stopped taking them when I found my old hard tail mountain bike from high school. Never riding bikes further than around town, I began my renewed passion for endurance sports. Finding spots on a map and going further, I began making adventures continuously longer. I got a road bike later that year, rode my first century the following year and then across the United States for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital after that.

Today I chase ultra endurance records and create challenges to inspire others and help those in need. My new book “For Those Who Can’t” is my account of cycling the US from North to South faster than anyone else before and why. I live by the mantra “Be Good To Each Other” and express that through my daily actions.
